Siena | Italy
This splendid medieval Renaissance villa once belonged to Pope Julius II and his subsequent descendants, for many centuries. More recently the property was passed to the hands of the Ricci family. Today the boutique Hotel, Relais La Suvera, is a 5 star luxury hotel; although, rest assured the hotel has been sympathetically preserved, with the original antique furniture and heirlooms. Facilities include an outdoor swimming pool and whirlpool tub fitted out in the building’s medieval cisterns, and is surrounded by wild gardens and a splendid church, stables and farmhouse.
Spa and Treatments
The hotel is located in the Chianti countryside, forty miles north of Florence, and 18 miles west of Siena. It is beautiful, peaceful, and everything you would expect of Italy.

Service is conscientious and friendly. There’s a rather lovely outdoor swimming pool, a wellness centre offering massages and beauty treatments; a whirlpool tub has been fitted out in the medieval cisterns, and a steam room and small fitness centre. In addition there’s a consecrated church in the main courtyard and an on-site museum making the very most of the family’s private collection of ancient furnishings, portraits and statues spanning nine centuries of history. Staff can organise truffle, and chocolate tours, as well as hot air balloon rides and cooking classes.
Food and Drink
Located in the old mill, The Oliviera Restaurant serves traditional Tuscan cuisine with a contemporary throw. The dining area sits in front of a fire place making it feel warm and cosy in the winter; while in the warmer months guests can dine on the terrace overlooking the Papal Villa.
The Bar dei Limoni is a lovely spot for a more casual lunch or dinner. Here the cuisine is reflective of recipes traditional to all parts of Italy, with an emphasis on hearty meat dishes.
Foods available are locally sourced, and seasonal. For example, Mediterranean fruits, local cold cuts of meat and salami, cheeses, eggs, pastries and homemade jams and cakes.
